I wish to express my opposition to the application by Capital Paving to have an aggregate pit in the area of Shantz Station Road and Hopewell Creek Road. In that area there has been a Cardiac Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine Clinic for 40+ years which has treated over 50,000 patients, one of which is my husband, who continues to be a patient of the clinic.
I personally have benefitted from being able to attend many of the lectures that are given to help people understand the complications etc. of their medical issues as well as get advice and help in the areas where my husband can help himself. It has been a great advantage to him be able to go there weekly and participate in an exercise program which is monitored by medical staff as well as a large walking track in a natural environment where the patient can be monitored with ECGs and with wireless ECG telemetry. It gives me peace of mind knowing that there is qualified help there, accessible at all times should he need it. Dr. Schaman freely gives of his time, day or night to test, encourage and treat people, and works with their doctors and cardiologists for the betterment and health of each person.
Speaking from experience, I know that it is very difficult to talk to or even get an appointment with a cardiologist without waiting for several weeks or even months because they are so busy. But it’s been a valuable benefit to be able to connect with Dr. Schaman who can allay someone’s fears, suggest they go to Emerg if warranted, or give helpful testing, advice and reassurance. I believe many lives have been helped, and even saved as a result of this clinic. Actually over those years, there have been a few people who have actually died there and were resuscitated and went on to live a normal life. I don’t know of another clinic in Canada which offers these services. Waterloo Region is very fortunate to have this facility so I’m asking that council take this into consideration when making it’s decision re Capital Paving.
I attended the meeting in the council chambers in September 2019 and was dismayed by the presentation made by Capital Paving, almost implying they would be a benefit to the local region! They may suggest that there would be only 4.6 trucks per hour passing down that road. If one pays attention to how many trucks go in and out of a comparable facility, one will find that there are many many more than that number. I travelled highways for 17 years before I retired and did my best to avoid all dump trucks because of the speed they travelled - I assume they were paid by the trip, as they seemed to always be in such a hurry, often creating safety issues.
As it is now, it’s easily recognizable at the clinic when a rare dump truck is going by because of the noise and windows rattling. Fortunately this has been quite a rare occurrence.
Apart from the volume of trucks that will be passing, creating dust, pollution etc, this has a negative effect on this otherwise peaceful, restful oasis, which was chosen years ago for that reason, where patients can get a break from the stress, anxiety etc that they are often trying to deal with.
If Capital Paving is allowed to go ahead with their plans, good agricultural land will be destroyed and people’s health, both of those in the local community, as well those from surrounding cities and towns, will be jeopardized! Is people’s health not the most important thing to be considered when making decisions? As I have already said, there is not another clinic like this in Canada. Let’s do what we can to protect it for today’s population as well as for our kids and grandkids. We should be proud to have and support this clinic.
I kindly ask the council to take my concerns into consideration when making their decision.
Sincerely,
G.A.
